A letter from Larry Oldham:

As we grow older and our life gets more fragile, it becomes harder to distinguish which path to take sometimes.  We are thankful that on October 12th you chose the path to attend our 57th Ben L. Smith Class Reunion. Dena and I enjoyed the camaraderie of the day. Trading stories, meeting new faces from long ago, sharing old memories and making new memories was what the day was all about.

This year was a different type of reunion: meeting in the daytime at a restaurant,  no DJ, no scheduled program and no upfront payment for decorations or renting a venue.

All you had to do was pay for your own meal. The plans of the reunion committee were simple this year. Because we are all getting older and in the prime of our best years, we have chosen to meet annually with this same format. We admit we missed the dancing, but we can also admit we are not getting any younger and our legs aren't what they used to be.

We did enjoy trying to get around to speaking to everyone who attended and if we missed someone, we apologize; that wasn't our intention.

We also want to thank Don Carr who works tirelessly keeping the Smith website up to date, and for all of his efforts of taking care of all the details to bring us the reunions.

We would be remiss if we didn't mention all of the deceased classmates who have gone on before us. Their memories and all the love we shared in our lifetime with them shouldn't be forgotten. May they rest in peace.

We want to thank you for your love and we want to let you know how much we love you after 57 years, for being a Ben L.Smith classmate friend.

This is truly our greatest class accomplishment.

With much love,

Dena and Larry Oldham

Just a quick note to share, we held a Welcome Home party from Vietnam for Bob on his 70th birthday. It was a wonderful tribute to honor his journey home, Bob was presented a variety of ribbons and a flag that flew over the Capitol building in DC on Memorial Day.
Friends, a great band and family were there to help celebrate, as well as comrades from the VFW and the American Legion. Our local MG club drove him around since he no longer has his favorite car. Then they presented him with an original MG key from England and a small die-cast model of his car. We made him a Memory scrapbook from his experience there. While it was 50 years ago. Welcoming him home officially was never too late.
